Tossed before the eyes of San Fermín

Photographies: Maite H. Mateo

This second Running of the Bulls of Sanfermin 2016 had many long moments of high tension and danger. The Cebada Gago bulls made lots of charges at the runners and there were many situations that could have produced authentic tragedies. As TV commentator, Javier Solano from the national TVE, stated the craziest thing of all is the fact that there were so few gorings, when there could have been 15 instead of the 5 that actually occurred.

The first real dangerous moment occurred in Mercaderes street, and it was the first sign of worse to come. It happened just outside the Kukuxumusu store, just a few meters from the corner of Estafeta street. A brown-colored bull turned suddenly aside and stared straight at a runner who had tripped up and fallen down. The bull charged at the fallen runner and tossed him as can be seen in this sequence of photos, captured by the camera of Maite H. Mateo.

The runner was tossed twice by the bull. The second tossing was the worst as the runner fell to the ground in a bad posture which could have injured him badly. However, he did not receive any goring. Perhaps the figure of San Fermín which had been recently painted by Kukuxumusu on the door of their store just a few weeks ago cast a helping hand to the lucky runner and left him with just some bruises.

“Let me breathe”

Sundays during Sanfermin, at 6:45 a.m. Carlos Mediavilla finds a spot for himself at the fencing in Duque de Ahumada Street in order to try to get image that he has been imagining for some time. Because he knows that at about one hour later, it`s very likely that two sun beams will appear there and enhance the scene with a very special short-lived beam of light.

Something like that has happened in this photo. Here, hundreds of runners may be seen, many of them regular runners on this stretch of the course, as they all rush forward towards the bull ring. Meanwhile, hundreds of other people look on from the balconies and fencing, getting their own dose of adrenalin from the whole scene. And, in among the packed crowd, the head of a bull looking as if it had a frightened gesture on its face.

Squeezed against the fencing

The first Running of the Bulls of Sanfermin 2016 featuring the Fuente Ymbro bull-ranch did not create any serious incidents although there were some moments of real danger. The danger did not lie in the bulls as these simply wanted to reach the bull ring as quickly as possible and totally ignored the runners along the way. This time the most perilous moments came from the various trip-ups and knock-downs caused by the runners themselves along a jam-packed course.

Adrenalin and blood at the entrance to the bull ring

Sometimes the photos of the Running of the Bulls can be a little or indeed a lot, hard-hitting ones. Like this one which was chosen by José Antonio Pérez Gómez, another one of our special group of photographers at Sanfermin.com. Funny enough, the bull shown here is Ermitaño, the self-same Miura bull that wished to charge another of our photographers, Javier Ibáñez.

The Miura bull that wished to toss a photographer

Javier Ibáñez Iborra is particularly fond of taking photos of the Running of the Bulls at the Telefónica-Callejon stretch. He can be found most mornings of the Sanfermin fiestas around that spot since he first came here about fifteen years ago. It is one of the places along the course that tends to produce curious situations, with loose bulls, or maybe one that turns back and goes in the opposite direction …

Whenever anything unusual like that happens, he does not hesitate to throw himself on the ground, with his heart racing at 100 per hour, for sure. And he attempts to take his photos from this position, just like this one that he has picked out from the hundreds of snapshots that he has captured over the years.

The mystery of the triplet bulls

“The Running of the Bulls is just like Russian roulette – you never know what you are going to get” acknowledges Iñaki Vergara, one of the few photographers who gets the permit pass that allows him, as they say, the right to “perch” on the wooden fencing.

Last year it was precisely pure chance that gave him one of his all-time favorite snapshots and one that won him the VI Running of the Bulls Photography Competition for qualified professionals –awarded by Pamplona City Hall. This photo captures three bulls from the Fuente Ymbro bull-ranch, lined together like three athletes as they run after three runners who are also equally caught in a direct straight line.

The feared horns of Cebada have become

The Cebada Gago Bulls will be on show in the Pamplona streets once again this year. Their sharp horns tend to ensure increased danger in the morning Running of the Bulls. Meanwhile we can but wait to see how the novel Pedraza de Yeltes bull-ranch will behave when they make their debut in 2016. The following information should be helpful to any runners thinking of taking part in this year’s Running of the Bulls event and hopefully ensure that no perilous punctures are caused to the body.
