The dramatic heap, in pictures

The pile-up began to form even before the pack of bulls arrived to the bullring. As a large number of runners started to rush into the arena, a side gate leading to the interior passageway was opened to allow a squad of local policemen to go in. However, it was impossible to close back the gate again due to the large number of runners running into the arena and who were crashing into the gate. This made the entrance even narrower than usual and gradually the huge number of runners entering the arena began to form into a blocked pile-up of bodies. The bulls were eventually led through this side gate and, moving around the ringside in single file, they came into the arena through another gate that was opened for them. They were led away to the pens without more ado.

Dramático montón en el acceso a la plaza

Today’s running of the bulls with the Fuente Ymbro bull-ranch will get into the history books for the intensely anxious final sequence when a pile-up occurred at the entrance to the bullring. Here a lot of runners received injuries which were quickly treated in the infirmary inside the bullring and the patients were later taken off to the Pamplona hospital complex.

As can be clearly seen from the TV video from RTVE (see lower left side of video), the pile-up began to form even before the pack of bulls arrived to the bullring. As a large number of runners started to rush into the arena, a side gate leading to the interior passageway was opened to allow a squad of local policemen to go in. However, it was impossible to close back the gate again due to the large number of runners running into the arena and who were crashing into the gate. The bulls were eventually led through this side gate and, moving around the ringside in single file, they came into the arena through another gate that was opened for them. They were led away to the pens without more ado.

It took 4 min. 15 sec. For the bulls to complete the course which leaves some 23 runners receiving treatment for gorings, bruising and contusions.

Two gorings in the arm

The 42-year-old runner from Terrassa J.B.P., suffered a severe goring to his right arm after being caught by the El Pilar bull. He was tossed against the fencing and gored twice to his right arm, both the interior and the exterior forearm. He was operated on after being rushed to hospital and is now in ward where his condition is stable.

The gorings happened when the runner tried to lead the bull towards the bullring. Within the gravity of his wound, it might be said that the runner was lucky to escape without a worse goring as the bull could easily have gored him in his neck which would have been almost for sure a fatal goring.

25 aniversario del martes sangriento

Today marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most dramatic and spectacular running of the bulls ever seen. The Cebada Gago bull-ranch featured in this bullrunning which was the most dangerous and dramatic that many runners had ever experienced in their lives.

It happened on the 12th of July, 1988, when one of the bulls, Doloroso II,  from this Cadiz bull-ranch, turned back and went all the way back to the pens in Santo Domingo. So, it covered most of the course twice and the second time, it was all alone, with all the danger that that implies. It was one of the longest-lasting bullrunnings in living memory as it took all of 8 min. 8 sec. for this bull to finally enter the pens inside the bullring. The total number of injured was six runners suffering from gorings and 7 suffering severe concussion and bruising and another 25  runners needed medical attention for various other injuries.

Today makes it exactly four years since the death of runner, Daniel Jimeno Romero, the last runner to receive a mortal goring in the Pamplona running of the bulls.

Born in Alcalá de Henares, this young man was an experienced and skilled runner and an ardent fan of the running of the bulls. He took part in many of these events in different parts of Spain, such as Sansebastián de los Reyes and other such towns, but his favorite of all was the Pamplona run.

It was here in Pamplona just four years ago that he received a fatal goring to his neck from the horn of a bull called Capuchino that belonged to the Jandilla bull-ranch.  He was rushed to hospital by the emergency services, but from the first moment, the medical service saw that his state was “very serious”. He was immediately operated on but David died almost immediately as his condition was too far gone to be saved.

Today, his parents and friends placed a wreath at the Telefónica stretch of the course, where the runner received the fatal goring.
