The bulls to be used on the 6th of July are from San Pelayo de Guareña with the three horseback matadors, Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza, Sergio Galán and Roberto Armendáriz; on the 5th of July the novillo bulls from the bull ranch of El Parralejo with the three young toreros: Javier Antón, Rafael Cerro and Posadas Maravillas.

The president of the bullfighting committee of the Casa de Misericordia organizing entity, José María Marco García-Mina stated that there has always been a tradition of repeating with those bullfighters who have enjoyed success in any given year and that “we have also wished to take a chance on some of the young rising stars who are aiming for the top and we feel that it is right and proper to help promote new faces in this renowned bullfighting week.”

Mikel Urmeneta, autor del cartel de la Feria del Toro 2013

Mikel Urmeneta is the author this year of the bullfighting poster – the Feria del Toro de Sanfermin 2013, which was presented to the public today by the Casa de Misericordia organization in Pamplona. This entity is responsible for organizing the bullfight week during Sanfermin fiestas. Present at the press conference was Mikel Urmeneta himself, along with members of the board of the Casa de Misericordia, among them the president of the bullfighting commission, José María Marco, as well as the mayor of Pamplona, Enrique Maya.

The poster made by Mikel Urmeneta endorses a long-term rapport in this artist with the world of art and with the world of bullfighting. Urmeneta presented a photo of an object he had come across, i.e. a part of a wooden foldable table in which the contour of a bull can be clearly made out whether looked at from above, behind or in front of the object and it seems to be just coming out of the pens to enter the bullring. On the use of this material, Mikel Urmeneta stated that “the combination of the Wood and Iron (with its singular form and color), evokes the entrance doors of the Pamplona bullring; the corrals and the bullpens”.

“The poster fulfills its mission of making a strong visual impact and at the same time stating the theme of what is being announced on the poster,” explains Urmeneta, who affirms that it is a poster which is “respectful of the Bullfight week”, but which also opens up “fresh approaches” than the more traditional ones often found in the world of the bullfighting poster”.

Urmeneta now joins a list of prestigious artists whose work has been commissioned down the years by the Casa de Misericordia organization which has been responsible for the posters for more than half a century. Among these, the designer, José María Cruz Novillo (1971), the Portuguese painter, Luis Pinto-Coelho (1979), painter and sculptor Eduardo Úrculo (1996), the Colombian artist, Fernando Botero (1998), photographer Jim Hollander (2002) or the architect, Rafael Moneo (2009)

This year the Casa de Misericordia personally commissioned a poster design from Mikel Urmeneta. The poster is wholly made by Urmeneta who is also the creative director of Kukuxumusu. The trademark of this company has always been its ability to make drawings which are chronicles and which, at the same time, portray a graphic humorous vision of the contemporary world. The company has never taken a strong stand on any of the polemical issues arising from the world of bullfighting but has simply limited itself to portraying the current reality of bullfighting. In fact, Kukuxumusu has managed to simultaneously do some work for the anti-bullfighting PETA organization while, at the very same time, continue to do its own comical drawings about the running of the bulls for its T-shirt collections, thus reaffirming its wish to reproduce all the existing points of view within our society.

El alcalde de Pamplona advierte que existirán toros en Sanfermin siempre

The award of the Premios Ciudadela de Pamplona were handed over to the bullfighters Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza – the horseback bullfighter – and Javier Castaño -matador- by Enrique Maya, Mayor of Pamplona, who took the opportunity to reiterate his belief: “I am fully confident that the Sanfermin Bullfight week in Pamplona is always going to exist. Pamplona and Sanfermin cannot be understood without bulls”, stated Enrique Maya in his speech as he handed over the awards. This statement in support of the Sanfermin bull fights which are organized each year by the Casa de Misericordia old folk’s home, mean an explicit support from the leading municipal authority of Pamplona for bullfighting and the running of the bulls during the annual Sanfermin fiestas. It is a newsworthy item in the sense that it goes against the normal anti-bull statements that we are becoming used to hearing in the media such as the case of the recent suspension of a bullrunning in Toronto or the withdrawal of several publicity campaigns which had the first prize of a trip to the Pamplona Running of the bulls.

The backdrop to the Mayor’s statement was a gathering of bullfighting fans for the awards ceremony and it was learnt here that the Bullfighting program in Quito (Ecuador) to which Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza had been invited to participate, has now been called off. This same bullfighter received his fourth consecutive award of the Ciudadela de Pamplona for his skill on horseback with the second bull of the day on the 6th of July, 2012 at last year’s bullfighting event during Sanfermin. Equally, the matador, Javier Castaño, was given an award for the skill he showed in the bullring with the third Miura bull on the 8th of July, 2012.

The ceremony was hosted by Mariano Pascal, who is the conductor of the bullfighting program “Va por ustedes”, on radio Onda Cero Navarra. The event was held on the eighth floor of the department store El Corte Inglés, in Pamplona, who sponsor this annual award. Pascal opened the event with some words for Carlos Crosta, who was a much-loved and important figure in the bullfighting week in Pamplona and who died earlier this year in 2012.

Their run in Sanfermin 2012 was a very fast one for this particular breed, which finished in the rapid time of 2.27″. This is one of the least dangerous bull-breeds – according to the statistics – and one of the fastest as their average time works out at between 2.19 and 2.46.

Torrestrella. Medina Sidonia (Cadiz). In 2013 Torrestrella will participate in their 12th running of the bulls. Up to now, over their previous eleven appearances they have caused 21 gorings and a total of 43 other injuries. ThisTorrestrella bull breed tend to cause the most damage at the Town Hall stretch and in Mercaderes where they have caused 4 gorings in each of these places. However, an even more dangerous stretch is Estafeta when these Torrestrella run as here they made a total of 8 gorings here.

Padilla, el rey de la fiesta

Pamplona received the matador, Juan José Padilla, like a hero on his return to the Pamplona bullring after the spectacular goring that he suffered last October when he lost one of his eyes and mobility to a part of his face. To the shouts of “!Qué huevos tienes!” the Peña clubs gave him a big welcome to the arena with of shouts of “Illa, illa, illa, Padilla maravilla” or “Tú si que vales”.

The bullfighter from Jerez strengthened his resolve and gave the packed bullring what it was waiting for and what he can do best. The Peñas in a rare gesture asked for silence for his final stroke with the bull and euphoria broke lose after he killed the first bull. The whole bullring stood up and applauded and loud cheering came from the sunny side of the ring. Padilla was carried around the ring shoulder high as wigs, neckties, wine sacks, fans and flowers were all thrown into the ring. One of the Peña club members dressed up in eye patches and with pirate flags and they presented him with one of their banners which he carried off among loud cheers and applause. With his second bull he was awarded one ear which meant that he could be carried shoulder high out by the main entrance to the bullring, amid the loud acclaim of the public.

The other successful matadors at this year’s Pamplona 2012 Bullfights were Jiménez Fortés with the Fuente Ymbro bulls, and Ivan Fandiño and David Mora with “El Pilar” bulls.

Camiseta homenaje por el 90 cumpleaños de la Plaza de Toros

The drawing shows a large cross-section of the different personalities related to the Bullring and the Bullfights: from the ticket touts to the president; from the infirmary surgeon to the fancy dress “Mayor” on the sunny side of the bullring. According to Mikel Urmeneta, founder-member of Kukuxumusu, “The drawing design aims to be a homage to the Casa de Misericordia Benevolent Society and to the 90 years’ existence of the current Bullring”. This drawing also has a sketch of Paco Cano, a photographer of the running of the bulls who has just turned 100 years of age.

Among other people characterized in the tee shirt drawing, Carlos Gil can also be found “he was an exceptional person who was very much attached to Sanfermin, and who died this past Spring.”

La conquista de Navarra en Sol

The Pamplona Peña clubs once again created one of their singular fiesta scenes yesterday, on the sunny side of the bullring. They came to the bullfights dressed as historical Navarra soldiers and equipped with their helmets, swords, shields, crowns, etc. and carrying a huge array of flags, in memory of the violent annexation of Navarra which took place in 1512.

Before going to the bullring, all the Peñas gathered together in Jarauta Street and, accompanied by their brass bands and bearing a banner denouncing the violent conquest of Navarra, they then paraded through the streets to the bullring, dressed in their historical outfits and carrying flags of Navarra to attend the third day of bullfights of this year’s Sanfermin fiestas.

Once in the bullring, they unfolded a huge flag of Navarra and began to enliven the scene with their mixture of songs, music and dancing, this time immersed in the character of medieval warriors.
