David Mora, lo mejor de la corrida de Valdefresno

Torero David Mora was the only bullfighter to stand out in the afternoon bullfights with the Valdefresno bulls. He was awarded one ear with his second bull. The other two toreros, Rubén Pinar and Alberto Aguilar finished empty-handed. The bulls from the Valdefresno bull-ranch failed to impress on their debut in Pamplona.

Un toro por el callejón de la plaza en la corrida de Dolores Aguirre

Manuel Escribano was awarded an ear in yesterday’s afternoon bullfight with bulls from the Dolores Aguirre bull-ranch. The young torero showed he has some style and he attracted the interest of the crowded bullring. However, the anecdote of the day was found in one of the bulls –the sixth of the afternoon named “Cantinillo”. This final bull jumped the wooden fencing of the ring and entered the passageway, giving the people who were gathered there at the ringside, an unexpected fright. Among those present was the State Government delegate in Navarra, who had to turn and run as fast as she could in search of a protection shelter, as shown in the photo from today’s local newspaper, Diario de Navarra.

Pitonazo en el craneo a un banderillero en una sosa corrida de Alcurrucén

The lackluster second bullfight of the Sanfermin bullfighting week was every bit as dull as the morning running of the bulls which featured these same Alcurrucén bulls. The only break in the monotony came when the banderillero David Peinado received a jab of a horn to his skull. His leg had been hooked by the bull’s horns and he fell to the ground without suffering any injury. But as a result of this action he was subsequently jabbed by the bull’s horn in his head, causing a 10-centimeter cut to the side of his skull. He was treated in the infirmary located inside the bullring. The banderillero could not continue with his bull, but it seems that the wound has been superficial and the bullfighter’s assistant is not in any danger.

But in general terms, the afternoon bullfighting proved very dull and boring and the blame must be laid on the Alcurrucén bulls whose level of fervor was well below that of the animated attempts of the bullfighters

The bullfighting week will also see a novillada on the 5th of July and on the 6th the corrida de rejones, or bullfighting on horseback will take place. The bulls to be used on the 6th of July are from San Pelayo de Guareña with the three horseback matadors, Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza, Sergio Galán and Roberto Armendáriz; on the 5th of July the novillo bulls from the bull ranch of El Parralejo with the three young toreros: Javier Antón, Rafael Cerro and Posadas Maravillas.

The president of the bullfighting committee of the Casa de Misericordia organizing entity, José María Marco García-Mina stated that there has always been a tradition of repeating with those bullfighters who have enjoyed success in any given year and that “we have also wished to take a chance on some of the young rising stars who are aiming for the top and we feel that it is right and proper to help promote new faces in this renowned bullfighting week.”

El alcalde de Pamplona advierte que existirán toros en Sanfermin siempre

The award of the Premios Ciudadela de Pamplona were handed over to the bullfighters Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza – the horseback bullfighter – and Javier Castaño -matador- by Enrique Maya, Mayor of Pamplona, who took the opportunity to reiterate his belief: “I am fully confident that the Sanfermin Bullfight week in Pamplona is always going to exist. Pamplona and Sanfermin cannot be understood without bulls”, stated Enrique Maya in his speech as he handed over the awards. This statement in support of the Sanfermin bull fights which are organized each year by the Casa de Misericordia old folk’s home, mean an explicit support from the leading municipal authority of Pamplona for bullfighting and the running of the bulls during the annual Sanfermin fiestas. It is a newsworthy item in the sense that it goes against the normal anti-bull statements that we are becoming used to hearing in the media such as the case of the recent suspension of a bullrunning in Toronto or the withdrawal of several publicity campaigns which had the first prize of a trip to the Pamplona Running of the bulls.

The backdrop to the Mayor’s statement was a gathering of bullfighting fans for the awards ceremony and it was learnt here that the Bullfighting program in Quito (Ecuador) to which Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza had been invited to participate, has now been called off. This same bullfighter received his fourth consecutive award of the Ciudadela de Pamplona for his skill on horseback with the second bull of the day on the 6th of July, 2012 at last year’s bullfighting event during Sanfermin. Equally, the matador, Javier Castaño, was given an award for the skill he showed in the bullring with the third Miura bull on the 8th of July, 2012.

The ceremony was hosted by Mariano Pascal, who is the conductor of the bullfighting program “Va por ustedes”, on radio Onda Cero Navarra. The event was held on the eighth floor of the department store El Corte Inglés, in Pamplona, who sponsor this annual award. Pascal opened the event with some words for Carlos Crosta, who was a much-loved and important figure in the bullfighting week in Pamplona and who died earlier this year in 2012.

Ganaderías para Sanfermin 2013, vuelven Torrestrella y Alcurrucén y se caen Domecq y Torrehandilla

The Bullfights Committee from the Casa de Misericordia in Pamplona has issued a press statement this morning with their definitive list for the bullfights for the Sanfermin fiestas Feria del Toro 2013. In 32 runnings (1980 -they did not run-) this Miura bull breed caused 12 wounds from gorings and caused another 149 injuries from bruising and injuries. Their run in Sanfermin 2012 was a very fast one for this particular breed, which finished in the rapid time of 2.27″. The Miura bulls behaved well on the day and did not attempt any charges at the runners, something which had become an increasing tendency in recent years.

El Pilar y Moisés Fraile. Tamames (Salamanca). In 2013, they will run their 5th running of the bulls in Sanfermin. From their previous 4 participations they caused 2 gorings and 16 other injuries. This breed is the fastest of the Sanfermin running of the bulls and they hold the record for the shortest ever run when in the running of the bulls of 13th of July, 2011 they covered the course in precisely 2 min. 11sec.

Cebada Gago. Medina Sidonia (Cadiz). In 2013 they will run for the 28th time in the Sanfermin running of the bulls (ever since1980). From 27 running of the bulls this breed caused a total of 46 gorings and 99 other injuries. their mean average of injuries works out at 1, 7 per running – the highest of any of the bull-breeds. The stretch where they cause the most damage is in the final stretch leading down into the bullring where they have made 14 gorings over their 28 appearances.

Fuente Ymbro. San José del Valle (Cadiz). In 2013 they will run their 9th running of the bulls in Sanfermin. They have caused in total 3 gorings and some 25 other injuries.

In their four previous appearances in the running of the bulls (the last was on the 7th of July, 2009) they never committed any gorings and have only caused 17 other types of injury. This is one of the least dangerous bull-breeds – according to the statistics – and one of the fastest as their average time works out at between 2.19 and 2.46.

Torrestrella. Medina Sidonia (Cadiz). In 2013 Torrestrella will participate in their 12th running of the bulls. Up to now, over their previous eleven appearances they have caused 21 gorings and a total of 43 other injuries. This is the second most dangerous bull-breed for causing gorings, as the average figure works out at a couple of gorings for each participation. ThisTorrestrella bull breed tend to cause the most damage at the Town Hall stretch and in Mercaderes where they have caused 4 gorings in each of these places. However, an even more dangerous stretch is Estafeta when these Torrestrella run as here they made a total of 8 gorings here.

Padilla, el rey de la fiesta

Pamplona received the matador, Juan José Padilla, like a hero on his return to the Pamplona bullring after the spectacular goring that he suffered last October when he lost one of his eyes and mobility to a part of his face. To the shouts of “!Qué huevos tienes!” the Peña clubs gave him a big welcome to the arena with of shouts of “Illa, illa, illa, Padilla maravilla” or “Tú si que vales”.

The bullfighter from Jerez strengthened his resolve and gave the packed bullring what it was waiting for and what he can do best. The Peñas in a rare gesture asked for silence for his final stroke with the bull and euphoria broke lose after he killed the first bull. The whole bullring stood up and applauded and loud cheering came from the sunny side of the ring. Padilla was carried around the ring shoulder high as wigs, neckties, wine sacks, fans and flowers were all thrown into the ring. One of the Peña club members dressed up in eye patches and with pirate flags and they presented him with one of their banners which he carried off among loud cheers and applause. With his second bull he was awarded one ear which meant that he could be carried shoulder high out by the main entrance to the bullring, amid the loud acclaim of the public.

The other successful matadors at this year’s Pamplona 2012 Bullfights were Jiménez Fortés with the Fuente Ymbro bulls, and Ivan Fandiño and David Mora with “El Pilar” bulls.

Camiseta homenaje por el 90 cumpleaños de la Plaza de Toros

The drawing shows a large cross-section of the different personalities related to the Bullring and the Bullfights: from the ticket touts to the president; from the infirmary surgeon to the fancy dress “Mayor” on the sunny side of the bullring. According to Mikel Urmeneta, founder-member of Kukuxumusu, “The drawing design aims to be a homage to the Casa de Misericordia Benevolent Society and to the 90 years’ existence of the current Bullring”. This drawing also has a sketch of Paco Cano, a photographer of the running of the bulls who has just turned 100 years of age.

Among other people characterized in the tee shirt drawing, Carlos Gil can also be found “he was an exceptional person who was very much attached to Sanfermin, and who died this past Spring.”
