Humped by the bull

Although “Huracán” was faster than any hurricane, and even though it passed over anything and everything in its path, and the normal thing to expect from this big muscular bull would be to cause a pile of injuries – the fact is that this third Running of the Bulls of Sanfermin 2017 finished without any serious injuries to the runners, including the young runner who was stampeded over at the Telefónica stretch.

Wrong-footed into the entrance to the bullring

Photo: Carlos Mediavilla

This runner – wearing a green necktie- was on the point of losing something more than his pants. His passage through the entrance to the bullring turned out to be a real adventurous one and one that could have ended in tragedy. Luckily, the runner was able to walk away from it all and the end result was just a big rip to his pants and a fright that will stay with him for quite a while.

3 Running of the Bulls, 3 loose Escolar bulls

The José Escolar fighting bulls are clearly rebels by nature. One year could be considered just a coincidence, even two could be pure chance, but three times in a row seems too much…his bull-ranch has taken part in just three Running of the Bulls and in all three one of these, the Escolar bulls have featured in a hair-raising quirk that begs for a logical explanation. Today, in this second Running of the Bulls of Sanfermin 2017, yet again it has taken place.

A trip-up, a leap and a goring to his arm

It was just a case of sheer bad luck for this runner who received a goring to his arm at the City Hall stretch of the course on this second Running of the Bulls of Sanfermin 2017. An inopportune fall on the part of another runner and his movement to get back on his feet meant that the unfortunate runner was blocked from running ahead and he got caught on the horns of the José Escolar bull, as can be seen in this sequence of shots by Javier Martínez de la Puente.

¿How is a bull like from up close?

Fotos: Javier Martínez de la Puente

In the first Running of the Bulls of Sanfermin 2017 which featured the Cebada Gago bull-ranch, some of the runners were able to run close in front of the horns. Some runners even got a very close-up view of the bulls. Perhaps, the one who got the closest view of all was this young man on the right side of the fencing at the City Hall stretch. He only had tenths of a second to analyze in detail just what the horn of a bull really looks like close-up, indeed, just what a fighting bull looks like close-up, and even what the Running of the Bulls event is really like close-up…. A close-up view indeed…

American man horned in the torax

The Cebada Gago bulls fulfilled their role as a dangerous breed of bull in this first Sanfermin Running of the Bulls. One of them proved to be especially dangerous when it ran up the Santo Domingo slope on the right side of the fencing and when it entered City Hall square it charged violently and gored a North-American runner (E.H. 35 years-old) to his thorax.

Citroen Cactus y el encierro de Sanfermin

The Citroen Cactus is inspired by the Sanfermin Bullrunning

There is a good chance that you have already seen this TV commercial spot as it has made a reappearance just lately on TV. This video of the Citroen Cactus was first made more than a year ago by the Havas publicity company under the slogan “Efecto Made in Spain”. This TV commercial features a vehicle which is made in Spain and it shows how the different owners of this car model from around the world also acquire certain Spanish cultural values at the same time as they acquire the new car. The video advertisement has been made with great care and creativity and it reaches its maximum feature when the owner of this new car model finds his road blocked by a polar reindeer in the middle of a wooded trail and the car must come to a halt. The driver gets out of the car wearing a red necktie just like the Sanfermin runners and he entices the animal as if he was taking part in the running of the bulls in Pamplona and in this way he gets the reindeer to move off out of the way.

Some cool style is shown by this “runner” in order to get the reindeer to move out of the way so that the car can continue its journey.

On Twitter, Javi Villaverde, wrote us to ask us to comment on this TV commercial spot as he feels it is quite well made and he is surprised that it has not raised more comment in the media outlets. Well, we think he is absolutely right; the fact isthe advert is very well done and its wink to the Sanfermin Running of the bulls is perhaps its very best moment of all. From the comments that we have seen on the video that Citroen produced at the time of the first showings of this commercial, it seems a lot of viewers liked the advert and they particularly praised the “Sanfermin” scene. It has to be said that there were also some negative comments stating that it showed a stereotyped image of Spanish culture with clichédimages like the siesta, the paella and Sanfermin. The creative team obviously intentionally played with these clichéd images of Spain, but within a humorous context, which is also an important characteristic of life in Spain.

Havas aimed to decontextualize typical Spanish customs which are of course, not so typical in Germany (Siesta), Singapore (Paella) or Finland (Bullrunning) and which would provoke surprise and admiration. The agency prepared a good launching campaign and a follow-up which worked very well and which can be followed on Twitter or Facebook at the has tag #efectomadeinspain.

At present, several models of the Citroen vehicle range are currently manufactured in Madrid or in Vigo –namely the Citroën C4 Cactus, C4 Picasso, Grand C4 Picasso, Berlingo, its Electric Berlingo and the C-Elysée. In 2015, 300.000 vehicles from this trademark were manufactured and they were sold in some 60 countries all over the world.

All the hospitalized runners have now been discharged

The 12 gored runners and the other 52 who suffered severe traumatic injuries over the eight Running of the Bulls events of Sanfermin 2016 almost totaled a new record for runners receiving hospital treatment in the different hospitals of the Navarra Hospital Complex. Finally, all of them have now been discharged from hospital and have returned to their own countries and cities to receive further treatment. While some are not fully recovered just yet, they do have a great story to relate about their experiences of the Sanfermin fiestas.

Many injured but not serious

The Sanfermin 2016 Running of the Bulls did not especially stand out for their dramatic moments, nor were they especially spectacular to watch. Nevertheless, the hard facts have their own story to tell: the figure of 52 injured runners for severe contusion and bruising equals the record set in 1993 and the 12 gorings, alongside the years of 2001 and 2002, make up the second highest number of gorings ever since records have been kept on the Running of the Bulls in San Fermín fiestas. The average figure for the duration of the runnings works out as the sixth fastest ones, in front of the 2 min. and 56 sec. of 2004 and behind the 2 min. 46 sec. of 2011.
