We have our winner of the #OverselfieSF Competition

In order to celebrate the final calendar step leading to Sanfermin fiestas, and taking advantage of the “Red and White” night organized by the commercial association of the Old Quarter of Pamplona on Friday 5th of June, we brought Mister Testis along with us in order to let the general public try out some selfie shots with him from some new angles and unusual altitudes. The best selfie snapshot would be awarded a T-shirt from the latest Sanfermin collection created by Kukuxumusu.

The II San Fermín international Photography Competition is looking at a fiesta for all ages

We have just learned some details about the II San Fermin International Photography Competition which is being organized by Luminosos Arga Digital. The organizer, Myrna Urrutia, tells us that this second consolidating edition of the competition hopes to “show that our fiestas are not dependent on any particular age group and that it is by no means only for the young adults among us. Children, middle-aged and senior citizens all equally enjoy the fiestas and indeed, everyone has their place in these Sanfermin fiestas.” At the same time, she underlined during her press conference that the philosophy behind the competition lies in revealing a truer picture of the fiestas than that which is generally shown by the media. That is why some original images that go beyond the more cliché images of the partying will be appreciated in this competition. The jury will bear this point in mind as well as evaluating the technical and artistic factors. The following names have been chosen to make up the jury members: Javier Villarreal, José Luis Pujol, Mikel Muruzábal y Pedro Armestre. The Rules and Regulations of the competition may be downloaded here (spanish language) as well as getting more information on those details which particularly interest you.

The winning snapshot will receive a prize of 1, 200 euros as well as a prize-winning dinner for two at Asador-Sidrería Martintxo Cider house restaurant. There is also a case of wine from the Bodega y trujal La Perdigana winery and Olive Oil Company. Second prize consists of a cash prize of 800 euros and the third prize has 500 euros. Both these runners-up winners will also be invited to partake of a dinner for two at the Asador-Sidrería Martintxo restaurant and also receive a case of wine from the Bodega y trujal La Perdigana. The Jury will make an initial selection of 20 finalists and the winning photos will then be chosen from this group.

Subsequently, there will be two exhibitions held of the finalist photos – at the La Morea shopping Mall and at the cider house restaurant, Asador-Sidrería Martintxo. Each entrant may submit up to five photographs before the closing date of 29th of July to the e-mail address: concursosanfermin@digitalarga.com

At the press conference which was held at the Cines Golem located inside the La Morea shopping mall, two – of the jury members were present – José Luis Pujol – shown first on the left – and Javier Muruzábal – first on the right. Also shown in the image is the Cultural Councilor from Pamplona City Hall, Fermín Alonso – second left – and Myrna Urrutia, from Luminosos Arga Digital.

Last year’s winner of this competition was Pablo Lasaosa with his photo “Tradición” which was selected as the best from among the finalists and now this year the search is now on for his successor.

A view of Sanfermin from Josef Kouldeka

It can be an interesting and constructive experience to look back at former years of the “fiesta de Sanfermin” to check out some of the aspects of the fiestas in the old days. Some things have changed and disappeared while others have changed for the better. And one of the best ways to do this is by checking out some of the material that the Magnum Photo Agency has accumulated over the years from such renowned photographers as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Inge Morat, or Josef Koudelka, among many others who worked with this agency.

Today, we would recommend taking a look at some of the work of Josef Koudelka who took photos of the fiestas between 1972 and 1978 in Pamplona. Some of his photos can be seen at the Magnum web site, where it is also possible to acquire copies of his photos and where you can also find some of this author’s books.

Some of the snapshots and images defy explanation such as the one below, – A Running of the Bulls? The Bull Ring?

Gorka Azpilicueta y Arsenio Ramírez en la rpesentación del libro en Pamplona.

Bull: a life in images, from Gorka Azpilicueta and Arsenio Ramírez

This weekend an habitual 21-year-old runner in The Running of the Bulls was given as a birthday present the book,“The bull: a life in images” (Toro: una vida en imágenes) by Gorka Azpilicueta and Arsenio Ramírez authors of the web page ‘Along the paths of the bull’ (Por las rutas del toro). The father of the aforesaid runner was the first person, at the launching of the book in Pamplona three days ago, to buy a copy of the book.

“The bull: a life in images” contains some 320 images about the life of the fighting bull, taken in 58 different bull-ranches from the 100-odd in total which were visited by the two authors, Gorka and Arsenio since they started making visits to bull-ranches back in the year 2000. The two men first met at a meal and soon afterwards they began making their visits and using photography equipment which was lent to them by relatives of theirs. Their hobby of watching the bulls in their natural surroundings in the countryside soon evolved into a habit of taking photos of the animals and now all of us can enjoy looking at the wide selection of snapshots of those privileged moments enjoyed by the authors.

Both at the launching in Pamplona as well as the one made in Logroño, there were more than 200 people in attendance at each event. Gorka Azpilicueta as well as Arsenio Ramírez both wished to make it clear that this book arose from their friendship “This is a book made between friends. That is what has brought it to light. Arsenio and myself produced the images, our friends at Welldone  provided the art and the models; Esprinta did the printing and Gorka Cía did the editing and the video is from Jokin Pascual…”

Jokin Pascual, a professional photographer carried out the task of creating the video presentation of this book. He reveals the story behind the creation of the book and the moves taken by the authors from an urban setting towards a rural setting, alongside the bull. Pascual used a RED Scarlet camera and his taste for quality images can be deduced from this book launching as he reveals the quality and interest that went into the making of this book. Pascual made the observation that “all the video reveals my own style in every image, but if I want to underline one moment from the video it is when we making a sweeping turn and move from the machine to the countryside. That is what this book is – a piece of the countryside in your hands.”

As well as the images, the texts are also the work of Gorka and Arsenio, but there is also a prologue written by Antonio Purroy and an epilogue from Salvador Magallanes.

And before finishing, we could not resist asking the question if the authors had put themselves in danger in getting some of the photos that were taken: “No, we were not in any danger. We always worked under controlled conditions. There is always someone there to help you. You are with friends from the bull-ranches who open the doors to their homes to you and you keep to the rules of the each house. There is a profound respect for the fighting bull and the lines are never overstepped at any time.”
