Hundreds of people came out in support of the PETA organization (Persons for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and demonstrated today, the 5th of July, in the streets of the old quarter of Pamplona, against the celebration of bullfights and running of the bulls.
In a holiday atmosphere, and with hundreds of citizens of Pamplona as witnesses to the event, the followers of PETA covered some of the same streets of the old quarter of the city which also serve as the course for the Sanfermin running of the bulls. Complying with the norms demanded by the Government representative, most of the runners did not run fully naked and in the general, most of the runners kept their underwear on as they demonstrated.
The demonstration, lead by a banner with the slogan, “Put yourself in the bull’s place”, started off from the Curtidores bridge and moved into Santo Domingo street, where most of the watching public were gathered. The demonstrators, accompanied by a group of repercussion-instrument players, handed out masks of bulls and leaflets with information about the PETA petitions. In line with previous years’ demonstrations made by PETA the whole event passed without incident.
Just as happened in previous years, the event took place without any incidents, although when they reached The City Hall square – at the instigation of the police present there – the demonstration had to be concluded due to the presence of children in the area as they were taking part in some children’s games and activities.
