Kukuxumusu has perched itself on a balcony in Estafeta street and from there it has drawn “Iepa!” its special tee shirt for Sanfermin 2006. Here, the six bulls and a handful of runners vie for the leading role as they advance up the street. This is the first time that Kukuxumusu does a drawing of the running of the bulls from high up and the first time ever that its characters take on an evident three-dimensional effect.

The new tee shirt with which Kukuxumusu celebrates its eighteenth Sanfermin substantially modifies the style of previous years. On this occasion the running of the bulls is seen from high up, in a race that covers the whole garment from top to bottom and which combines the idiosyncratic and unique aesthetic of The Drawing Factory alongside the classic Sanfermin gear for the fiestas. In addition, a greater perspective has been achieved thanks to the effects given by the shadows of the bulls or the runner being gored.

Mikel Urmeneta and his team have once again created a tee shirt that reflects a part of the Sanfermin reality as well as reproducing the rather tragic-comic and original viewpoint of Kukuxumusu. As Urmeneta himself sees it: “In line with the rupture in last year’s model, this drawing shows for the first time a bird’s eye view – or a human view from a high balcony - of the running of the bulls. It is almost a drawing in three dimensions, a running of the bulls that moves up from the tummy to the throat, a bit like the sensation you feel when you watch the running of the bulls, explains the creative director at Kukuxumusu.

Homage to Hemingway and a tee shirt with the Peña clubs
The other two important contributions to the fiestas on the part of Kukuxumusu respectively arise from a joint effort with the Peñas, and with a homage paid to Ernest Hemingway, on the 80th anniversary of the publications of his novel “Fiesta”.

In the former case, the tee shirt shows the badges and the colors of the 16 Sanfermin Peñas in the classic Kukuxumusu style; in the latter case, the North-American writer appears beside a slogan with a double meaning: “80 years of Fiesta.” Both tee shirts form part of the Sanfermin 2006 Kukuxumusu collection which is made up of some twenty models in total.

With regard to collaborations with other collectives, Kukuxumusu has made two very distinct drawings and indeed, apparently contradictory: on the one hand, a drawing for PETA, the association which asserts the banning of the running of the bulls and the bullfights, while on the other hand, a drawing for Goldenpalace, which uses the running of the bulls to make publicity for itself and which donates money to charity organizations at the same time. This year the donation will go to the Navarra Association for Multiple Sclerosis.

Search engine for injured now on the web and the Encierrometer
Besides their tee shirts, The Drawing Factory will also be present in the fiestas with their web page sanfermin.com. This year there will be two important innovations - on the one hand, the introduction of videos created by Mikel Urmeneta himself, and on the other hand, the introduction of a search engine on the Sanfermin portal with data on more than a 1,000 people who have suffered some kind of accident or other in the runnings of the bull over the past 25 years. The data base allows searches to be made for all the running of the bulls since 1980, using criteria such as the name of the injured person, the stretch of the run, the date or the different bull-breeds that have taken part.

The web page will once again have its regular sections, with a special emphasis on the running of the bulls. Here, each day around a hundred different photos taken by the team of photographers for Sanfermin. com can be viewed, as well as a report on the running and up-to-date information on the injured.

Equally, a complete guide on the fiestas can now be downloaded from in front of the two Kukuxumusu stores in Estafeta Street. Through Bluetooth technology, anyone can now get this practical application in their mobile phones, which this year will also contain the “Encierrometer”, a program created by Kukuxumusu and the Public University of Navarra which allows us to know the potential risk factor involved in making a particular running of the bulls.

Kukuxumusu will celebrate the 2006 fiestas with other initiatives, among them the tenth successive edition of “Guiri Day” (‘The Foreigner’s Day’), a traditional homage paid to the foreigners who come to Sanfermin. The Swede, Lars Ingvar Jungeförs, has been given this year’s award. On the 8th of July, a celebration meal will be held which will pay an extended homage to all the members of the Peña Los Suecos, and where previous winners of the award such as the North-American, Lora Monnig and the Puerto Rican, Carmen Margarita Alicea, will also attend.
