The Sanfermin 2004 running of the bulls end with a total of 16 gorings inflicted

The 2004 runnings of the bull have finished up with a total of 16 runners gored by the bulls. This figure is higher by five than the total for 2003, and is the highest number of gorings recorded over the past 25 years. However, it has to be taken into account that half of the... [more]

The “Pobre de Mí” without candles, without heart, without anything

The “Pobre de Mí” is the closing ceremony of the fiestas. To take the harm out of it, somebody invented the line about “ya falta menos” (“there is not long to go”) – until next year, they mean to say. But to celebrate the fact that there is not long to go is surely much better, say, on the 3rd of July, when there is only three days to go before the fiestas start. Or even some daft day such as Tuesday, 23rd of November, when there would be 245 days to go. Anyway that’s the line.
Today’s proposal is – and with all due respects to those who don’t like the idea – to have a “Pobre de mí” without any fervor, without any candles and without anything of anything. The best thing to do would be to ignore the thing and to do something edifying and... [more]

STORIES OF SANFERMIN
1908  Three running of the bulls in one day

At the beginning of the last century the running of the bulls was still very much a home-grown affair and it seems that the bulls still had the chance to say no thanks to an early-morning run. Or rather it would seem they could decide on when to run when they felt like it. The fact is that one the 9th of July, 1908 a spot of three different runs were seen. First of all, in the morning three of the six bulls decided that they did not want to leave their pen, so that there was a running of the bulls with just the three bulls which did exit the pens. When they were already in the bullring the other three who had been reluctant to leave were coaxed out of the pen and these were raced up to the bullring. To crown it all, in the afternoon a heifer somehow escaped and ran around charging and frightening the general public who were out strolling in the streets. The press of the day states that various ladies were assailed by the animal in Estafeta Street. The municipal police finally managed to shoot the poor animal dead, - for being so cheeky and brazen we can only suppose
