The Fiesta takes off

At 12.00 midday in the warm sunshine – contrary to the wet weather forecast – and in a jam-packed square, the Sanfermin 2004 fiestas took off when the city hall councilor, Jorge Mori, who had been selected to fire the rocket this year, set light to the wick of the rocket, at... [more]

The “txupinazo” rocket on the TV

I say to myself, I say “Today is the txupinazo”!! – D-Day, the inauguration of life itself, the “G point” of an almighty spree, the climax of happiness, a merry roistering to end all roistering, “lobotomy day”, unrestrained insanity, the “mother” of all parties, the most of the most, the source, the genesis and apopolypse of the whole Sanfermin scene, the sanctification of Bacchus flowing through the streets and squares of the city, the wildest, the hottest, the zenith...
I answer myself: “Faced with such grandeur, such sumptuousness, such opulence, it might just be better to come down to earth, to mark one’s distances, to make some space – not too much, all the same – just in case I go and break something. On the TV in the bars they also... [more]

STORIES OF SANFERMIN
1902  Gorings for all

At the turn of the twentieth century, the bulls were creating plenty of mayhem in the bullring. The bullfighters fought up close to the bull as times were hard and they were pretty desperate. And of course, at that time the horses had no padding or protection of any kind. As such the gorings were frequent and bloody and did not seem to scandalize the spectators much. For example, at the bullfight on the 7th of July 1902, Antonio de Dios, “Conejito”, suffered a serious goring (a bull from the Condesa de Espoz y Mina breed was the culprit) that almost killed him. He survived, but in a bad way for a long time after. The horses had worse luck. The same bull killed eight of them that day. The previous year there were a total of 39 horses killed during the six days of bullfighting. And the following year there was one day when a total of 14 horses were killed in the ring.
