The poster created by Mikel Urmeneta and Marta Coronado which will announce the coming Sanfermin fiestas 2004 was declared the winning entry this afternoon by the Jury which was made up of artists and representatives from the Iruñea/Pamplona city hall.
The poster, with the title “Pop”, shows some figures in white and others in black in a scene from the running of the bulls. In order to create the poster, after first scanning the original drawing made by Mikel Urmeneta, silhouettes of the figures were cut out on a red cotton cloth and afterwards the figures made with black and white cloth were sown on. In this way, the backstitching of the sowing-machine can be appreciated on the design. Deformity in the drawing was conscientiously obtained in this way so as to give the scene a more original character.
This novel technique was precisely one of the elements most valued by the jury. Its president, Ignacio Perez Cabañas, councilor for Culture in the Pamplona City Hall asserted that the decision was not easy to reach as the general level of the entrants was very high. Pérez Cabañas explained how the jury gradually began to eliminate posters until they were finally left with a short list of eight entrants, from which three posters were ultimately chosen. Finally, the poster presented by Mikel Urmeneta and Marta Coronado was chosen as the winning entry with the consensus of all the members of the jury.
