“The sunny side of the bull-ring is a part of the peculiarity of the Sanfermin bull-fights”
José María Marco is, as president of the bull-fighting commission for the Casa de Misericordia (Old Folk’s Home), the chief executive and planner of all that has to do with the world of bull-fighting in Pamplona; that is to say, the bull-fights, the bullfighters, the assistants of the bullfighter, the bull breeders, the bull-ring etc. A fan with a seat on the shaded side of the bull-ring - which in Pamplona means not being a fan of the sunny side of the ring - something obvious but necessary to keep in mind - he confesses that he is a real addict of bull-fighting. He loves the annual Bull Fair, with all its virtues and defects, in spite of the poisoned darts aimed at the particular way a good part of the Pamplona public consider the proper way to “feel” the fair. In any case, the best bullfighters - or at least the best-known ones, and the best bull breeders -with the best bulls for Pamplona - continue to faithfully come each year for this special nine days of the bull fair. José María Marco, among others, ensures that year after year this quality continues.
-Would you say that in Pamplona there is a real affection for bullfighting or do the people go from habit?
-In Pamplona, just as happens in other big bull-rings, there is both affection and habit in attending the bull fair. Outside of the bull fair few people go to the ring.
