The twenty-fifth anniversary of the events of 1978

Several events will take place today on the 25th anniversary of the events of Sanfermin 1978, when the fiestas were suspended on the 8th of July of that year after the serious incidents which took place at the end of the bullfight and which resulted in the death from gunshots of the young man, Germán...

And the party took off

At twelve o’clock on the dot, as it should be, a loud and swarming crowd watched the Sunday txupinazo set off the official start of the fiestas, which in any case had already started for many several hours earlier in the day. Few people were prepared to wait for the designated time and from the early...

“Sanfermin is a celebration of cruelty”

Their aim was to draw attention to the suffering, which in their opinion the animals undergo, and to show that “you can have fun at the fiestas without torturing animals”. The coordinator of the PETA campaigns in Spanish, the North American, William Rivas-Rivas, who is an ex-naval official, very solemnly and gravely explained his attitude to Sanfermin, as he defended the value of the running of the bulls (or rather, the human running) as against that of the running of the bulls.

-Mr. Rivas-Rivas, where did the idea come from of having a nude human running along the stretch of the running of the bulls?
-The Sanfermin festival is a celebration of cruelty and the bulls in Pamplona are running straight to a horrible bloody death. With the running of the humans, we wish to show that there is a fun way of running which is more humanitarian and without causing suffering to animals.

-What did the local people in Pamplona say to you during the event?
-What the local people say is not the most important thing. The most important thing is that our...
