And the party took off |
|
At twelve o’clock on the dot, as it should be, a loud and swarming crowd watched the Sunday txupinazo set off the official start of the fiestas, which in any case had already started for many several hours earlier in the day. Few people were prepared to wait for the designated time and from the early...

The countdown is over |

It is getting very close now, there are only hours left before the start of the Sanfermines.

Ten questions for ...
Mikel Urmeneta |
“Kukuxumusu is a parasite beneficiary of Sanfermin”

He runs away from slogans, from stereotypes, from ordinariness, from clichés and, on a night out on the town, from anyone who becomes a drag and won’t leave him in peace. Mikel Urmeneta, the founder of Kukuxumusu, that hot house of back-to-front drawings, feels free to say and do whatever he feels like, and for that reason perhaps, provokes both delight among his devotees and stirs up his detractors. He is the chief jester in a firm that sells a million tee shirts a year and yet he does not take himself too seriously. This year he celebrates his fifteenth Sanfermines ( Kukuxumusu that is, - he himself has been around a bit longer than that) and it doesn’t look as if, in the short term, that the affair is anyway finished with just yet. The Drawing Factory and its world have a bit to go yet. Urmeneta warns: “Retirement can wait a bit yet”. We interrupt him from his Sanfermin fixation to get some insights.
-What is a guy like you doing at fiestas like these?
-I was born here 39 years ago so as to be near my mother, on the 25th of December, to be exact. Curiously, I would have much preferred to have been born on the 6th of July; I hate Xmas and I love Sanfermin. I don’t much like the imposed family scene and I really enjoy the spontaneous one. I detest the cold and I adore the heat. I don’t dig Santa Claus or the Three Wise Men scene and I really dig the Giants… etc.
-Here’s a question to start you off - what do the Sanfermines smell off?
-Above...
