“There is no perfect encierro photo”

Sanfermin, the largest photographic studio in the world, is a paradise for the graphic reporters who walk its streets. Jim Hollander, an American, is one of the most habitual photographers at the annual fiestas, and his photos can be viewed at sanfermin.com/gallery. At the beginning of July each year he departs from the conflictive region of Jerusalem, where he works as a Reuters correspondent, and comes down to Pamplona for the Sanfermin fiestas. He first visited Pamplona at the early age of 13 with his parents and he was so taken by the whole scene that he got hooked for life. The clearest example of his devotion to the Sanfermines are the thousands of photos he has taken since then- one of which was used on the poster to announce the bull-fight program in 2002. His book - “Fiesta” - with 315 pages and 296 snapshots of the fiestas - came out last year as a result of his 25 and more years as an eyewitness of the running of the bulls, the bull-fights in the ring and all the wild party scenes over the years. In the esteemed company of his camera, we follow him around some of the corners of the Sanfermin fiestas.
-You have been both a runner and a photographer of the Encierro. Where have you had your best moments - in front of the bulls or on the other side of the fencing?
-I think I’ve done well both in front of the bulls and in the streets. Of course when I ran (I stopped running in 1977 after about 90 encierros) I was younger. Maybe taking pictures I’m wiser,...
