Yesterday evening for some hours the fiesta changed its more usual aspect and made a halt to watch the Word Cup Final played between Spain and Holland. The giant screen placed in the plaza del Castillo main square allowed thousands of fans to watch the triumph of the Vicente del Bosque national team.
In spite of criticism from the Federation of Peña Clubs, City Hall decided to maintain the location of the giant screen in the plaza del Castillo and to modify the official program to avoid having people going home to watch the game. The participation was certainly a success and the aim of continuing with the partying in the street worked out perfectly. Sanfermin blended perfectly with the football celebrations.
When the game began the square was crammed with people, with people even watching from the balconies. The game was followed with keen interest and tension. The thousands gathered in the square were supporting the Spanish national team in their great majority, so that when the winning goal was scored by Iniesta near the end of the game, there was high delight. After the final whistle was blown and victory had gone to "la roja"- the Spanish national team - there was an explosion of joy and excitement among the large crowd. A few Dutch followers could not contain their disappointment and it showed in their faces when the game was over.
