Hundreds of candles lit up the streets of the old part of Pamplona last night and it was clear that it was only a matter of minutes before the chimes of midnight were struck and at exactly 24.00 the moment arrived to say goodbye to Sanfermin 2009. It was the same councilor - Maite Esporrín - who had set off the opening txupinazo rocket - who pulled down the curtain on the fiestas when she chanted the "Pobre de Mí" closing song from the balcony of City Hall. Then the candles were blown out and the fiestas were over.
Pamplona has said farewell to nine intense days of fiestas and sensations where all the local people and all the visitors to the city were able to enjoy all kinds of shows and music, bulls and a party atmosphere. The weather was particularly benevolent this year even if the number of visitors was down somewhat compared to previous years. Nevertheless, there was a wide range of visitors from all over the world to add color and universality to the Pamplona fiestas.
Likewise, the Giants and their entourage, the street performances, the music scene and all the cultural activities on show once again proved that the bulls are not the only epicenter of the festival, although this year, they did leave their mark on the fiestas with the tragic goring that took the life of the young Madrid runner, David Jimeno.
Now, Pamplona is at rest, but it will soon begin to muster strength to begin plans to receive Sanfermin 2010. The countdown has started and within 356 days Pamplona will once again be a party scene.
