The 2009 Runnings of the bulls, marked by the death of Daniel Jimeno

14/07/2009. A total of ten runners gored, nine of these in the two dramatic bullrunnings of the Miura and Jandilla bull-breeds

The 2009 Running of the bulls have had two opposite sides to them. On the one hand, the quiet clean and almost incident-free running of the bulls which featured the Alcurrucén, Cebada Gago, El Ventorillo, Dolores Aguirre, Fuente Ymbro and Núñez del Cuvillo bull-breeds; and on the other hand, the intense dramatic running of the bulls by the Miura and the terrible tragedy of the Jandilla, with the death of the young Madrid runner, Daniel Jimeno.

There was nothing to indicate that these runnings would turn out as they did. In fact the first three mornings seemed to indicate that things would be quiet this year, rather like last year’s runnings were. The Alcurrucén, Cebada and El Ventorrillo bull-ranches all only left some slightly-injured runners in their wake. All of these runners were discharged the same day from the hospitals where they had received treatment. Except for one runner, from Madrid, who had received a jab of the bull’s horns in the Estafeta stretch.

On the 10th tragedy struck with the Jandilla bulls and more particularly, "Capuchino", a bull who created anguish and terror on the stretch leading into the bullring and that caused almost instant death to Daniel Jimeno with a fatal goring to the neck of the young runner. Sanfermin.com web page published an exclusive photo of the moment of the goring. In addition, this bull left several runners seriously injured, among them, the veteran American runner who suffered severe thorax traumatism and who continues to remain today in The Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

After the serene running of the bulls on the 11th with the Dolores Aguirre bull-breed, tragedy returned with the Miura bull-ranch on the 12th. This year these bulls did not live up to their name as a noble breed, and they turned the entrance into the bullring into another pool of blood, thanks to a bull named "Ermitaño". This animal left a Pamplona runner almost for dead after tossing him around like a rag doll for over 20 seconds. The bloodcurdling photos of this goring will go down in the history of the running of the bulls for their crudeness.

The two final days with the Fuente Ymbro and Núñez del Cuvillo bulls passed off without any gorings, and with less runners, which allowed for some good running to be appreciated and with the general feeling that this was not just another year of the running of the bulls.

It will be difficult to forget the names of “Ermitaño” and “Capuchino”, the shocking images of the running of the bulls on the 12th and, above all, the death of the young runner: Daniel Jimeno Romero.
