The origin of these fiestas lies in the Christian celebrations in honor of the martyrdom of San Fermin, who was decapitated on the 25th of September, 303 A.D. in Amiens (France). The chapel of the saint is decked out for the weekend and a novena is held which finishes on Saturday, the 25th. And the Old quarter of Pamplona, known as San Fermín de Aldapa or Aldapa celebrates its fiestas. There are two programs of events - one brought out by the Comisión de Fiestas del Casco Viejo neighborhood organization and another from Pamplona City Hall.
During these short fiestas there are no running of the bulls in September nor any fights. Nevertheless, during some years there were some bull fights and running of the bulls held during these fiestas: in 1991 ( 22nd of Sept.), 1992 (19th and 20th) and 1993 (25th and 26th). The best-remembered fiestas of Sanfermin Txikito are those of 1978, when the proper Sanfermin fiestas were cancelled and the bullfights and running of the bulls took place in these September fiestas.
