The main event from Kukuxumusu for Sanfermin 2009 was the "Jai Day", an initiative with which The Drawing Factory hopes to invite representatives from other world-famous festivals with the aim of paying homage and acknowledging the concept of the universal festival. For its first edition, Kukuxumusu chose La Tomatina, a festival which takes place in Buñol in which each year some 40, 000 thousand people participate in a tomato-throwing battle through the streets of Buñol, a town in Valencia.
Frank Taylor - "Guiri del año"
Kukuxumusu acknowledged Frank Taylor as the "Foreigner of the year" for Sanfermin 2009. For the first time, the celebratory award was held in the "Europa" restaurant rather than the "Don Pablo" and everything went well as always. Taylor is an Englishman from Dogmerfield and is a founder-member of the Peña Frank. Since 1969 he has been returning to Sanfermin, often taking his family with him. He used to take part regularly in the running of the bulls up until 1993. He retired at the age of 62.
The Bend
The special Sanfermin 2009 tee shirt drawing submitted by Mikel Urmeneta and Kukuxumusu was called The Bend. And this year, yet another new angle on the running of the bulls - that of the bend at Mercaderes leading into Estafeta Street. This drawing captures a frozen moment of a typical running of the bulls where it is difficult to separate bulls and runners and where a motley collection of people are seen on the fencing. Some are trying to take a snapshot, others look at the sky, pick their noses or fall asleep or wait for the bulls.
