Yesterday, Kukuxumusu celebrated the III edition of Jai Day (‘the day of the fiesta') by paying homage to the New Orleans Mardi Gras. After a de rigor brotherly and convivial lunch, in the Casa Catachú Restaurant, we all got up on this enormous float and moved off to the rhythm of some live swinging jazz music from the Mr. Dixie Jazz Band. Surrounded by friends, necklaces, caps, masks, beers, confetti, horns, tits and baldy heads, we took a good lengthy spin around the central streets of the old part of Iruñea/Pamplona. Hundreds of people join in the parade to celebrate this special edition of a North-American carnival right in the heart of Sanfermin fiestas.
Kukuxumusu's idea has never been to make a hodgepodge of two different fiestas, but rather to simply boost the concept of Fiesta, by inviting each year a representative group from some other world- famous fiesta so that they can see how we enjoy ourselves in Sanfermin and while they are here, take advantage of the opportunity to show us how they celebrate and enjoy their own fiesta thing. In 2010 we paid homage to the German Oktoberfest from Munich and in 2009 we did the same with the La Tomatina from Buñol. From this type of initiative all of us can learn something and at the same time, promote our own cities while we make new friends and have a hell of a good time while we are at it.
Yesterday, Arnie Fielkow, New Orleans councilor and current vice president of City Hall, played the dual role of host and guest as he moved around with us on the carnival float. Also present was John Hemingway, Guiri Del Año 2011 and grandson of Ernest Hemingway; Silvia Azpilicueta, councilor for Commerce and Tourism in Pamplona City Hall. Among other guests who joined us was international TV reporter, the chameleon-like Jon Sistiaga; the cinema director Diego Abad; the photographer Maite H Mateo; the intrepid twitter, Mia Font (@4colors) and Roc El Ferretero. Among our own crowd was Bettie Basque, and of course the blue bull, Mr. Testis and indeed, a large representative group of workers from Kukuxumusu who kept the party atmosphere at a high pitch.
Celebrations help unite people; they make us better people, more positive, less taciturn, more open, less preposterous, more integrated, less selfish, more human, less animal. Celebrations are not frivolous expressions but rather meeting outlets of great transcendence.
Long live communication!
Thank you, all my friends from Kukuxumusu. Good work!
