Kukuxumusu and the Public University of Navarra have created the “Encierrometer” a computer application which, taking into account all the diverse factors that come together in the running of the bulls, allows the user to consider a risk index of the dangers in making the run. The system is available on the webpage www.sanfermin.com/encierrometro and during Sanfermin it will be possible to download it to your cell phone, through Bluetooth technology. This initiative originated at Kukuxumusu, the tee shirt design company which is linked to Sanfermin and which runs the webpage, Sanfermin.com And working from the premise that in a running of the bulls there are a series of factors which can be quantified objectively, it was decided to create a program which would allow the runner to know the objective risks he faces in making each run. Professors Fermín Mallor, Sagrario Gómez and Carmen García-Olaverri, from the Department of Statistics and Operating Investigation at the Public University of Navarra, and Pedro Mateo, from the University of Zaragoza, were responsible for the development of the technical part of the project using methodology from multi-variant statistics. To design the application they took as their base data from the 207 running of the bulls held since 1980, and they took into account the opinion of 55 people directly connected in some way with the running of the bulls. The “Encierrometer” is a simple computer application which allows the user to know the risk factor index of running the bulls by responding to ten variables: data relevant to the runner himself (age, physical condition, hours of sleep, alcohol, experience in running and participation in other events with bulls, and knowledge of the rules in force. Also, the particular day considers questions such as the bull-breed that will run, the day of the week, the state of the ground). According to the combination of risk factors given to each variable, through an index from 0 to 10, the result will show the risk involved in running the bulls in those particular circumstances. For its creators, the program is just another computer tool for those who want to take part in the running and a fun game for anyone who is interested in the running of the bulls event. However, both Kukuxumusu and the UPNA University assert that “in no case, do they wish to encourage people to take part in the actual running of the bulls” and they stress that this is simply an orientation index on the general risks involved in running the bulls within given circumstances. The“Encierrometer” may be consulted by anyone interested in doing so at the webpage www.sanfermin.com. In addition, during the coming Sanfermin fiestas, the application can be downloaded to cell phones – for free, using Bluetooth technology – from two devices that are located at the two Kukuxumusu stores located in Estafeta Street - which is also one of the stretches of the running of the bulls.
