The Mayor of Pamplona, Yolanda Barcina, has made a positive evaluation of the fiestas period of Sanfermin 2010 during her appearance before the media at a press conference today. She highlighted the fact that they were "brilliant fiestas with lots of positive points and few negative ones ". She drew attention to the fact that the Sanfermin fiestas had been "marked by a heat wave this year and that the Giants and their Troupe had deservedly featured highly this year in many events. There was also an excellent atmosphere whenever the Spanish national team had played in the World Cup and especially in the final game which they won".
According to what she said, the events organized by the City Hall of Pamplona, within the official program for San Fermín 2010, saw a total of 1.500.000 spectators - a figure slightly higher than last year. However, according to figures issued by Pamplona City Hall, the number of visitors dropped by 3'2% in comparison with last year. Hotel occupation was at 90% and according to the Navarra Association of Hotels and Catering (ANAPHE),the slight drop in the number of people had no affect on their volume of work, as the figures are very similar to last year. The good weather probably helped to reach these same figures as the hot weather lasted right through all the days of the fiestas.
The artificial fireworks and the Giants were the stars events of this year. A total of 470.000 people watched the fireworks displays from the surrounding areas of Yanguas y Miranda, Avenida del Ejército and the Vuelta del Castillo, while the Giants and their Troupe helped gather a total crowd of 225.000 people over the nine days of fiesta.
With regard to the question of citizen security, Barcina stressed that the total number of formal complaints made to the police had dropped by 14% compared to 2009. However, it had to be said that police intervention in public rows and fights had grown by 11, 5% this year.
Likewise, the mayor wished to underline the fact that improved public behavior has been detected in the use of glass and garbage waste disposal. Over the nine days of fiestas, waste disposal was down by 7% in total weight compared to last year. Finally, Barcina wished to express her appreciation to all those people who, by their behavior, have helped to make sure that the fiestas of Sanfermin 2010 passed by in a normal and correct way.
