SANFERMIN
CUISINE
The offer is as large as it is varied during
the days of the Fiesta. You can eat well or very well
or practically any way you please. The prices tend to
go up during these days in comparison with the rest of
the year. But many places keep the same prices as the
rest of the year. The real problem is simply to find
a place during the Fiestas which is not overbooked. Particularily
at the weekends where it is pretty chaotic and somewhat
less so in the middle of the week.
If you go to one of
the more normal eating-houses be prepared to queue up.
In Spain, there isn't a total
tolerance of smokers although in San Fermin, often, it's different. The waiters will also be doing their
damnest under hectic conditions (real saints, at
certain moments). Patience is a virtue from all sides
at moments like these.
The top-class places will be
somewhat less hectic as one might expect but be prepared
for a wait here
too.
The classic eating hours in Pamplona are from
2.00 until about 3.30 in the afternoon. Dinner is
usually
served between 9.00 and 11.00 at night. However,
during the days of the Fiesta, you can probably sit
down to eat at 5.00 in the afternoon and still be
served and likewise, sit down for dinner at midnight
and get served without much problem. (Probably a
more normal time during the Fiesta).
There are always
fast-food stands available in the street of course
but in general, they are best avoided
if you want to eat decently. You will see some kind
of trolleys in the streets offering a very suspect
food (most of the times txistorra, bacon, sausages,
etc.). If you are really hungry you will maybe think
that it is an exquisite delicacy, but be sure that
other times it will destroy your stomach and maybe
the festivals will be finished for you. It is better
for safety to buy a sandwich in a bar or in the political
parties’s stand, you’ll feel better.
