How sanfermin.com measures the duration of the running of the bulls

In 2019 a person called us in the middle of a party because it depended on the duration of the confinement that a good amount of money was won in a bookmaker. In the conditions of the contest it was stated that the duration of the confinement published on our website would be taken as a reference. The problem was that the duration of the running of the bulls on TVE and that of sanfermin.com was different. With the duration of TVE that person earned money and with that of sanfermin.com another person earned it.

You will wonder how there can be different durations of the same confinement and that is why we are going to explain it.

Exact duration of lockdown

To begin with, since we regularly calculate the speed of the bulls for the statistics, we take into account the exact time and the correct distance. They are regular variables that must be calculated with the same criteria in order to be able to compare them with each other over time.

1-.Our measurement of the confinement in meters goes from the door of the corral of Santo Domingo, to the door of the bullpens of the square. We do not take into account the interior space of either of the two pens. That distance measured by the center of the street of the entire route and the center of the square, up to the gate of the corrals, is 875 meters. The measurements were made with a wheel odometer calibrated after the renovation of Calle Estafeta and it was revised with the renovation works of the alley.

The distance of the running of the bulls used by sanfermin.com is 875 meters

There are two segments where the bulls run alone, as is the beginning of Santo Domingo and, if there are no legs or reckless people, from the center of the plaza to the entrance to the bullpens. We consider everything lockdown. If a pastor has an incident in the plaza, he is injured in the running of the bulls; If a runner can’t open up in time upon reaching the plaza and keeps running, he’s in lockdown. That is the average that we take into account for speed averages, etc.

2-.And once we have the distance, let’s proceed to calculate the time to establish averages and speeds. We do not take as reference the sound of the starting rocket. Generally we correct one to two seconds, until the first bull’s horn or halter shows through the door of the Santo Domingo corrals. In the same way, we do not take into account the sound of the rocket that warns that the bulls are in the bullring. The running of the bulls does not end for sanfermin.com until the last member of the starting herd (either bull or halter) has entered the corrals. If a bull has to be picked up by the tail halters, that bull will mark the end of the running of the bulls. If one tame is delayed from the initial start, that halter marks the end of the race.

It is for these reasons that the times of the running of the bulls on sanfermin.com generally differ from those on TVE. If we did not do it this way, we would not be able to calculate the average speed of the herds as faithfully as possible.

An example of how it affects the average speed of the lockdown

In the confinement of the bulls of Puerto de San Lorenzo on July 7, 2019, it can be verified that the herd takes four seconds to leave since the clock starts. In addition, at the end of the race, we consider that another second is given away. The official broadcast time is 2.41. For sanfermin.com, it is 2.36, which is the actual time that the bulls were running. With that data, the running of the bulls was completed in 2 minutes and 36 seconds. Which is 156 seconds.

The formula for speed is distance divided by time, which in this case would be V=875 meters/156 seconds. This gives us 5,608 meters per second, which in kilometers per hour is 20.18. If we take the official TVE time as a reference, with five seconds without a race, it is 161 seconds, giving 5.434 meters per second and 19.56 kilometers per hour. We understand that this time is not real because it has five seconds in which the bulls were not on the course, offering incorrect figures to compare with other running of the bulls. We hope that is clear.

July 11th.

© Juan Ignacio Delgado
@Manuel Corera

July 9th. Cebada Gago

A Cebaga Gago bullfight had never run on a Sunday. The running of the bulls on Sunday have some special characteristics because the stereotypes of the running of the bulls lead us to think that with more runners, there is more danger. However, let’s look at the actual patterns and see what the data tells us. According to the numbers provided by the Pamplona City Council, Sundays are still the days with the most runners. From 2017 to the past, 4,026 runners have disappeared from the running of the bulls, but the pattern remains that Sunday is one of the most recurring days to enjoy a race with bulls like the one in Pamplona.

In 2022, Sunday was the busiest day with 363 runners above average. With one hundred more runners than on Saturday, a traditional pattern, except in 2018 and 2017 where Saturday was the day with the most attendees.

If we take that data and cross it with goring, the data tells us that Sundays are dangerous, but not much more than Thursday. The increase in participants is not particularly reflected in the danger of goring. A goring difference may not seem like much (they give it to you -some would say-)

Of the running of the bulls held on Sunday, the most compelling sections are Santo Domingo, Telefónica and, especially, the Callejón. The section of the Plaza de Toros -without gorings- is the least dangerous, followed by those of the Town Hall, Mercaderes and Estafeta. These data come from the 47 Sundays with Sanfermin running of the bulls in the modern era of the running of the bulls. Let us remember that the Miura confinement of July 13, 1997 was not held, as well as those of 2020 and 2021.

The average duration of these bull runs is 3:53 with a record of 0.82 gorings per bull run. The typical confinement of a Sunday in the eighties included the Pablo Romero, from the nineties, the Miura.

July 9th. José Escolar bulls

The advancement of the line that limits the space of the runners in the running of the bulls in Santo Domingo is triggered precisely by the behavior of this ranch. His animals are very interested in everything and have turned around at the start of the race three times . The most famous case is that of Curioso in 2015 , but in 2016, another of his brothers turned, made the journey alone and seriously gored a neighbor of Cizur in the chest . Again in 2017 another of the bulls was delayed in Santo Domingo and left the two gorings of the bull run of the day. This action of advancing the paint is intended to allow the herd to run more homogeneously or, at least, without a loose bull by noticing the runners as soon as they leave the corrals. As can be seen from the statistics of recent years, without bulls turned and alone, bull runs are less dangerous and moderately fast.

According to the data collected after the passage of this herd through Pamplona, ??Santo Domingo is the section where Jose Escolar has left the most gorings (2 in 5 bull runs) and, therefore, the most dangerous to run with them.

Loose bulls from Escolar, gored. Bulls together, without incident

In their first three races, with loose bulls, the Escolar left eight gorings. Without loose bulls, I run the bulls faster and with less danger. It must be taken into account that the first of his races was contemplated in the time of the herd in the square, since between Curioso returning to the pens and then even the gas, that went on forever. This image of the bull returning to the corralillos from the Santo Domingo corral is historical because it had not been recorded in the modern era of the running of the bulls.

School numbers in Sanfermin

According to the data from the Bullrunning Analytics tool , on July 9th he will join the bulls from Escolar in Pamplona because it will be his sixth race and half of them will have been run on July 9th . Only one fact surpasses this figure and that is that four of the six races have been run on Saturday. It is the fourth herd that has run the most on Saturday. Keep in mind that Saturdays are the running of the bulls in which more injuries are recorded, both due to trauma and other circumstances.

The fifth school running of the bulls in 2019 was the 11th fastest running of the bulls in Sanfermin. The 1st is that of 07/14/2015 (2’05»).
School’s last running of the bulls was the 30th running of the bulls held with a wet floor due to rain. The previous one was on 07/14/2018.
It was the 2nd fastest running of the bulls on wet ground due to rain. The Escolar are the second fastest in the wet after Miura.
In 5 participations, Jose Escolar has left 8 gored (1.6 due to running of the bulls).
Jose Escolar is the 9th herd that has left the most gorings (8 in total).
Jose Escolar is the 9th herd with the highest goring average (1.6 per running of the bulls).
In 5 participations it is the 2nd time that Jose Escolar has not been gored.
Of the 5 runs of the bulls held by Jose Escolar in Sanfermín, this has been the 1st with the shortest duration (2’13»)
and the 4th fastest running of the bulls held on a Tuesday.

High goring rate and just as fast in the wet

They are two data that are opposed. The index of gorings per confinement of the bulls of José Escolar is 1.6. This number exceeds the average and scares and therefore we raise the expected danger of this running of the bulls. In addition, they are the second fastest herd in the wet, although as we have told you on many occasions, the data tells us that the runs of the bulls in the Wet are less dangerous .

Right now the top ten fastest wet runs are headed by Miura, who in 2018 marked one of the fastest runs in history despite the wet floor. The Escolar are not far behind, only four seconds behind , followed by the Victoriano del Río. If it rains, do not trust that they run just as fast. Others of the Escuela races, the one in 2018, also on wet ground, is the ninth fastest race on wet ground.

July 8. Escolar Bulls

The José Escolar bulls will tour the streets of Pamplona for the seventh time. It is the preferred livestock on Saturdays since it has been chosen for that day on five occasions. Saturdays are a day with a lot of people in the race and the day in which the running of the bulls registers the most injuries due to trauma (6.01 per running of the bull) and more injuries due to other circumstances (7.17 per running of the bull).

The Escolar bulls became famous in the Pamplona running of the bulls by becoming the “Curioso” bull in the running of the bulls and riding a good one. You can read the chronicle here which is very “curious”. The following two years, two other bulls returned as well, but it ended with loose bulls completing the race, not like in the first case where the bull returned to the corralillos del gas.
