Perera makes the most of his opportunity

The afternoons are passing quickly and we have seen several matadors let their opportunities slip by, while several others have made the most of their chances of leaving their mark. Pamplona is still an important and respected bullring although its main gate is beginning to look like the main entrance to a large department store during sales week, with so many coming in and indeed, being led out, in triumph.

Everything worked out as planned for Perera, because faced with a fine herd of Jandilla Bulls he had two good performances with his two bulls. Especially, the first one where he might have been awarded two ears, if the President had not remembered that Pamplona’s bullring is still a serious one – and today’s President did remember that – and if he had got the two ears it would not have been much of a mistake.

Iván Fandiño was also in form, he is winning over this bullring to his side more and more. He got a good ear for his first and if he did not get more, it was because he got the two worst bulls to fight. In any case, he showed some very good work on his left side with the first bull which the most knowledgeable among the spectators could appreciate and applaud.

Sebastian Castella got entangled in his performance. Especially, in trying to finish off his first bull, after a more than acceptable initial performance. With the second, which came out to fight at picnic time, there was little he could do. The bull fell too early and after that, there was no way to lift his performance.

Iván Fandiño, Tossed yet carried out shoulder high

Iván Fandiño was on the point of losing out in the fiesta. A crude tossing from his first bull left him with a gash to his right thigh but this did not prevent him from continuing with his work at hand. He was awarded a rather generous ear for his efforts and he then went straight to the infirmary to get a certificate from Doctor Hidalgo to allow him to go back out for his second bull. Here, he went all out and with this fifth bull of the afternoon, he was awarded two ears and the main gate was opened to lead him out shoulder high and so the afternoon proved to be another triumph for this Basque matador in Pamplona.

The bulls made their contribution; the best ones we have seen so far this week. Fandiño made the most of them and both Juan del Álamo and Padilla let their chance slip away, for one reason or another. The Salamanca matador was a bit unlucky with his first bull, perhaps the weakest of the batch and with the second bull he did not know how to finish it off cleanly. The matador from Jerez was a bit unlucky to see his first bull get injured And then he had his second bull just when the spectators were getting out their picnic baskets and their minds were on other things. Even so, both bullfighters showed some class and were perhaps a little unlucky to come away empty-handed.

The best part of the bullfight, the picnic

The picnic. What a treat. The exciting moment that arrives to substitute the boredom, the tedium and the general docility. Yesterday was even more necessary than ever. That’s why the photo that accompanies this article is more exact than ever.

Willingness there was, especially from Paulita, making his debut. He gave his everything – especially with the third bull- to try to overcome the impossible. The bulls were simply not up to it. Meek… awkward… vacant. They just could not respond. Uceda Leal, a veteran matador was the first to realize that there was nothing that could be done. And he quickly threw his hat at the whole thing. The local Navarran, Francisco Marco, had few opportunities but he had to try. He put his heart into it but he too failed to get any response from the bull. The whole lot of them, bulls and matadors went off empty-handed. In silence.

Tomorrow Padilla will be on display. And that will be a different story.

The main gate is opened on the very first day

The first bullfighting event, in this case the traditional novillada heldon the eve of the opening of fiestas, saw the opening of the main gate in homage to Borja Jiménez, the young novice bullfighter from Seville. This would-be matador did not waste his chance to show his talent and he merited being carried out the main gate for his display before the young bulls. He was awarded one ear for his first bull and two ears for his second bull. In addition, he substituted for Posada de Maravillas in killing a third bull, after this young bullfighter had wounded himself with his own sword when he tried to finish off his first bull.

The program was completed by Francisco José Espada, who was also awarded a trophy after two aceptable performances against two “novillos” (young bulls) which lacked spirit and which prevented him from making a bigger impression.

The second bull fought by Borja Jiménez, which went by the name of “Camillero”, also had its moment of glory. The dead animal was lead around the arena for showing great valor and bravery before it was finally killed by the apprentice matador.

Late last night a medical report was issued on the state of Posada de Maravillas. As well as a horn wound to his thigh, he had also suffered a “bad bruising to his right wrist with tendón injuries to his 4th and 5th fingers, and a superficial injury to his 3rd finger with a sectioned ulnar nerve”. He was removed to hospital in a serious condition.

Everything’s ready for the Feria del Toro 2014

With just a few days to go before the start of the Feria del Toro 2014 bullfighting week in Sanfermines, some of the bull-breeds are already in the bull pens located at the Corralillos del Gas. During the fiestas, Sanfermin.com will keep continual up-to-date reports on everything connected with the Bullfighters and the bullfighting week to ensure that nothing is missed.

For this edition of the Feria del Toro de Sanfermin 2014, the Casa de Misericordia organization has wished to include some of the most veteran bullfighters but, at the same time, to include some of the most promising aspirants as well, to ensure a nice variety of styles for the Bullfighting week. The matadors who stood out in last year’s bullfights – Padilla, Mora y Fandiño – will be back again this year, as will Miguel Ángel Perera, one of the most successful bullfighters of this present 2014 season. And of course, the ever popular bullfighters such as El Juli, Talavante, Hermoso de Mendoza and Galán will all be on show this year once again.

Just as some bullfighters repeat year after year, so too, do some of the bull-ranches such as the Miura, Jandilla or Dolores Aguirre bull-breeds. Then some others are invited back after an absence of several years, such as the Adolfo Martín. And this year, for the first time ever, there is a new bull breed on show – the Garcigrande, which has been chosen thanks to their great successes achieved across the country in season 2013, and who will appear for the first time in Pamplona at the Feria del Toro 2014.

Carteles de encierros y toreros para la Feria del Toro 2014

The organizing entity, Casa de Misericordia from Pamplona has just released this afternoon the lists of bull ranches and bullfighters for the coming Sanfermin Feria del Toro 2014. There is a budget of around 3, 5 million euros this year. This figure is roughly shared at about 70% of the total Budget for the fees of the bullfighters and about 30% for the bull ranches. Some of the 2014 season’s big successes will be seen in Sanfermin – such as Miguel Ángel Perera-, some of the more successful names from last year’s Feria del Toro 2013 have also been invited back – such as Padilla, Mora, Fandiño- and some of the concurrent classic big names such as – El Juli, Talavante, Hermoso de Mendoza and Galán-. Then again some others such as Morante and Manzanares continue to give Sanfermin bullfighting week a miss and won’t come to the Feria del Toro this year either. José María Marco García-Mina, a member of the Bullfighting commission explained some of the criteria behind the choice of bullfighters and Bulls.

3 euros per adult and 1 euro per child is the cost of the tickets to enter the bullring each morning to watch the running of the Bulls event.

Perhaps one of the most conspicuous measures taken for this coming year’s fiestas is the fact that the running of the Bulls will no longer be free for all those who wish to watch the event from inside the bullring. The increase in security costs and the need to ensure the safety of the bullring has meant an increase in the number of personnel contracted to control access to the bullring and to ensure that no dangerous objects might be thrown from the stands. This need for more control has been pushed by both the Government and the City hall and so the Casa de Misericordia feels obliged to cover these costs by charging for the seat tickets to the bullring for those who wish to watch the bullrunning from there during the weekdays. Up to now these weekdays had been free for entrants. José María Marco García-Mina, representing The Casa de Misericordia explained these details at the press conference.

The Bullfighting Commission from the Casa de Misericordia has released a statement this morning to notify that the Sanfermin Feria del Toro 2014 will see the first-time-ever appearance of the Garcigrande-Domingo Hernández bull ranch. Two other bull-ranches will make their reappearance after an absence of some years, namely the Adolfo Martín and Jandilla bull-ranches. The reason for the inclusion of the novel Garcigrande was explained by the Commission as due to “the good results obtained by this bull-ranch over the 2013 bullfighting season.” Likewise, the bull-ranches of the Jandilla and Adolfo Martín have been contracted again after missing the last few years. Five of the bull ranches from the total of eight appear once again in 2014. They are the Dolores Aguirre –which win the award as the best bulls of 2013 with the premio Feria del Toro. Also continuing are the Fuente Ymbro –one of whose bulls last year won the Carriquiri award, the Miura, the Victoriano del Río and the Torrestrella bull ranches.

Three of last year’s breeds were not signed up this year; the Alcurrucén, the Valdefresno and the El Pilar bulls. The novillada on the fifth and the horseback bullfighting on the sixth keep the same bull ranches as last year: the San Pelayo de Guareña for the horse-back fights and the El Parralejo for the young bulls in the novillada.
